Why did the Korean War occur between 1950-1953? (12 marks)
The Korean War is a period of armed conflicts between North Korea (a communist state) and South Korea (a pro-Western state) which started basically when North Korea invaded South Korea. There are a few reasons why the war started.
The clash in ideologies has led to the Korean War. Both Kim Il Sung, leader of North Korea and Syngman Rhee, leader of South Korea resented their country’s division and wanted to bring about reunification as soon as possible. However, each leader wanted a unified Korea to be under his own ideological rule and to have his own ideological type of economy, thus there is a conflict between ideologies.
Another reason which led to the Korean War is Kim’s miscalculation of USA’s actions which resulted in his aggressive moves. In the Defense Perimeter speech made by Dean Acheson in 1950, it was clearly stated the areas within the US Defense Perimeter (e.g. Japan, Guam and the Philippines) which the US will automatically defend against any communist aggression. As South Korea was not listed to be within the Defense Perimeter, Kim calculated that South Korea was not considered a priority that the US will defend, thus he was able to convince Stalin that the US will not get involved in the invasion of South Korea and a swift victory will ensue, thus Kim took the opportunity to attack. Also, corruption in the South Korean government has made Rhee’s rule very unpopular. There was also increasing Communist support in the South. Under these circumstances in South Korea together with Kim’s desire to be seen as a national hero to unify Korea, it seemed like the best time to act without any US intervention, thus Kim launched an invasion of South Korea which led to an all-out war.
Another reason which led to the Korean War is the US fear for the spread of communism. In line with Truman’s policy of containment, USA decided that communism should be contained on the periphery of Asia. However, it became clear that the US strategy in Asia to contain communism was not successful. The US was afraid that the Domino Theory might occur. China turned Communist in 1949 and Truman firmly believed that if one country fell to Communism, others would follow like a line of dominoes. He was worried that if Korea fell, the next “domino” would be Japan which was important for US trade. Thus, America saw a need to prevent the spread of Communism in Korea and called for
